Held once every two years, the Alberta Winter Games feature more than 2500 athletes from ages 11 to 17 competing in 19 different sports, everything from badminton and gymnastics to skiing and figure skating. For many of the young athletes participating in the games, this will be their first major provincial competition, and for others it will be a crucial step on their road to becoming an elite Olympic athlete.
The 20th Alberta Winter Games takes place from February 6th to 9th, 2014 at a variety of locations in the Canmore-Banff area.
In addition to sporting events, visitors and spectators at the Alberta Winter Games, will have numerous opportunities to experience local arts and culture at a number of special community events.
The games promise a big boost to the local economies in Banff and Canmore: over 10,000 visitors are expected to visit the area in connection with the games and an estimated $2.5 million is expected to be generated. It’s a benefit thanks in large part to the tireless efforts of more than 2500 volunteers who work to make the games a success.
The AWG is unique in it’s commitment to sustainable operations, boasting the title of being the first truly “green” edition of the bi-annual event. The goal is to ensure that 80% of the waste generated during the games is recycled rather than sent to the landfill.
A weekend pass, which provides access to all sporting events, is just $20, available online. A family weekend pass is also available for $75, giving a family of up to 5 people access to all events.
