There’s another reason beyond the glorious weather and scenery to visit Canmore this March. You can also experience world class biathletes, competing in two races for the IBU Cup! The International Biathlon Union (IBU) cup races are held all around the world, usually in Europe, but this March, races 7 and 8 of the traveling series will be held at the Canmore Nordic Centre Provincial Park, a world-class nordic sport venue. Until 2012, an IBU Cup had never been held off the European continent, but in that year, Cup races came to Canmore, and now they’re back again.
Many of the athletes competing in these races will be from Canada, as well as headlining athletes from Germany and Norway. Among the competitors will be former World Cup medal winners and half of this year’s athletes will certainly be World Cup competitors next year. There are races for both male and female athletes, all of whom are among the best biathletes in the world. The last time Canmore hosted this many world-class biathletes was back during the 1988 Calgary Olympics.
Biathlon, which combines competitive skiing with competitive target shooting, is a sport watched by millions on television in Europe, and draws crowds of thousands to races and competitions in their host cities. You can experience that level of sporting excitement right here in Canmore, and since you’re likely to be inspired, why not stay a little longer and visit the Canmore Nordic Centre yourself for a day of cross-country skiing, tobogganing, ice skating or even Winter Disc Golf before you retire to your home away from home here at the Inn?
It’s all part of what makes your stay in Canmore special. We look forward to seeing you!
