Bear Day Canmore Hotel Safety Nature Grizzly

On Sunday, April 5th, many people all around the world will grab their baskets and set out to find chocolate eggs left behind by the Easter Bunny. However, on April 11th, the folks in Canmore do things a little differently. They go out on a search of their own, but instead of trying to find chocolate, or even bunnies they look for something much, much larger—bears.

This isn’t as crazy as it sounds, however, because in Canmore, April 11th is Bear Day. After all, how often do you actually see the Easter Bunny? The beautiful evergreen forests around Canmore are much more likely to host bears, which is why Alberta Parks and WildSmart have teamed up once again to host a day full of fascinating demonstrations and displays as well as informative research and safety talks.

The Program

Start the day at 10:00 am with a bear safety talk featuring biologist Jay Honeyman. If you’re planning on doing any hiking in bear territory, you won’t want to miss Honeyman’s explanations of how you can avoid bears and how you should act if you do encounter one.

Next, complete your safety training with a demonstration of inert bear spray, complete with training spray. While usually only a precaution, having the right training with your safety equipment is the best way to protect both you and any bears you encounter.
With your safety ensured, it’s time to give the bears a turn. Conservation officer Randy Ramsden will be talking about the methods he uses to keep bears safe from humans, especially in places like campgrounds and highways. After this, you’ll get to learn about how research is undertaken on bears using remote cameras to ensure the habits and habitats of bears are preserved.

Over the course of the day, you’ll also get to view wildlife displays, meet a Karelian bear dog, and go on a scavenger hunt (sorry—kids only!). Bear Day is sure to be a huge hit with any nature lover.

If you’re in town for Bear Day, or on any other business, be sure to stay with us at the Pocaterra Inn. Your comfort is our main concern, so book a room today. We look forward to your visit!
