Mountain Biking in Canmore

posted by: BEST WESTERN PLUS Pocaterra Inn on: June 30, 2014 10:42:14 PM
Welcome to Canmore, one of Canada's premiere destinations for mountain biking in the heart of spectacular Rocky Mountains.  Whether you're looking for single-track thrills or relaxing jaunt surrounded by truly breathtaking scenery, Canmore has it all!

If you haven’t brought your bike along, there are plenty of bike outfitters in town.  There are also a few great comprehensive online guides to mountain biking trails in the region, one of which can be accessed here.

Below are a few of the locals’ favourite mountain biking spots, which you won’t want to miss while staying in Canmore this summer.  Ask our friendly front desk staff for further tips and up to date trail information.

Stoney Mountain Bike Trail

Although the name might indicate otherwise, Stoney Trail is a laid-back leisurely ride on a smooth dirt road with very little elevation gain.  Riders can expect pleasant views of grassy meadows and mixed deciduous and coniferous forests.

To access Stoney Mountain Trail from Canmore drive 35 km. east on Highway 1 towards Calgary to the Highway 40 exit and drive south into Kananaskis Country. The trailhead is 9 km. south at the Barrier Dam Day Use Area.

Goat Creek Mountain Biking Trail

Mountain biking is exhilarating, especially when the trail is entirely downhill!  Forget the hill climbing and head straight for the Goat Creek Trail, 18 km. of downhill single and double track trail stretching from Canmore to Banff.

The fun part of this trail is of course getting back uphill to Canmore.  Many parties leave a car in Banff to make the return hassle-free.

To access Goat Creet Trail from Canmore drive 9 km. south on the Smith-Dorrien / Spray Trail (Highway 742 - gravel road) which begins just past the Canmore Nordic Centre.  Turn right into the parking lot, where you will find the trailhead.

Prospector Trail

Not for the faint of heart, Prospector Trail begins with a rigorous 5 km. climb, which gives access to a plethora of single-track trails and a very cool downhill stunt area featuring a giant slab of limestone.

Other fun features for the avid mountain biker are walls, skinneys, ladder bridges and berms adding to the action along the trail.  Check out this awesome video taken on the Prospector Trail.

To access Prospector Trail from Canmore, drive east on Highway 1 towards the town of Exshaw.  The people in Exshaw are incredibly friendly.  When you arrive in town, just ask a local how to access the trail and they will freely assist you.

If you’ve come to Canmore this summer to experience the thrill of hanging on to your handlebars for dear life while speeding down steep mountain slopes, you’ll of course be in need of pampering accommodations at the end of a long day.  At the Best Western Pocaterra, we offer our guests access to an indoor pool, hot tub, sauna and steam room.  Book your room with us today!
